Replace the Volvo final drive if the housing is cracked or the machine is already past its major rebuild interval. Rebuild it if the damage is internal and the rest of the undercarriage is healthy. That is not the cheapest answer, but it is the correct total-cost answer more than 80 percent of the time in my spreadsheets.

Why I'm Not Chasing The Lowest Final Drive Quote Anymore
In 2022, we bought a rebuilt final drive for a Volvo EC480 excavator from a non-dealer supplier. It cost $4,200. The machine had 9,300 hours, and the original final drive had a leaking seal and a damaged sun gear. The rebuild looked good on paper.
It lasted 14 months. Then it started grinding, and by the time we shut the machine down, the planetaries had mauled the housing. We didn't have a formal rebuild-versus-replace policy back then, so we paid labor twice and rented a machine for six days. That one invoice is the reason I built a TCO spreadsheet for every driveline component.
Since 2019, we have ordered 23 final drive assemblies or major rebuild kits across wheel loaders and excavators. In our fleet, aftermarket generic parts showed a failure rate of roughly one in five, while OEM or factory remanufactured parts failed about one in ten. I don't have hard data on industry-wide numbers, but our sample was enough to change the policy: any final drive over $2,000 goes into the cost system before we approve the PO.
Volvo Final Drive: Rebuild or Replace?
Before you get to a dollar figure, you need to know what is actually broken. The final drive is the planetary gearbox at the end of the drivetrain that turns hydraulic or electric motor power into track speed. On a Volvo excavator, it is usually the planetary reduction at each track; on a wheel loader, it sits at the axles.
Rebuild When the Housing Is Still Good
If the failure is internal — a worn bearing, chipped gear, failed seal — and the housing is in spec, rebuild it. A Volvo dealer rebuild or a certified drivetrain shop with Volvo specs will cost you in the ballpark of $5,000 to $8,000 for a large excavator final drive, depending on the model and what they find when they open it. That is about half the price of a new assembly, and the gearcase hours are still on your side.
Just don't treat every rebuild as the same thing. The dealer measures clearances, checks the case for stress cracking, and installs current part revisions. A generic shop may just replace the broken gear and put it back together. One of those results is a repair. The other is a hope.
Replace When the Housing Is Cracked or the Machine Is Late in Life
Once the housing is cracked, the rebuild math dies. A cracked case means the alignment that holds gears and bearings is gone. Even if it looks weldable, it is not worth the risk on a 30-ton machine. Replace it.
I also replace rather than rebuild if the machine has more than 12,000 hours and we are planning to keep it for another 5,000. You do not want to put a one-year repair into a component that needs to survive until trade-in. New or certified remanufactured final drives for big excavators run from $12,000 to $18,000, as of our Q1 2025 quotes. That sounds painful. It is less painful than a mid-job failure.
Used OEM, Maybe, but Only With Proof
A used OEM final drive from a salvage yard can be a good middle option, but only if the seller documents the source machine's hours and service history. I have seen yards claim 4,000 hours on a unit that had clearly been sitting in salt water. If they can't show photos from the split, walk away.
Counter-intuitive as it sounds, a verified used OEM unit can beat a new aftermarket unit. The OEM core was designed for the machine's duty cycle. A new generic replacement may have thinner gears and looser bearing tolerances. Real talk: a generic part can fit the bolt holes but still be a downgrade from a factory component.
Volvo Electric Changes the Final Drive Math
Volvo Electric machines, like the EC230 Electric excavator and L120 Electric wheel loader, still have final drives. They are not a completely different animal from a gearbox perspective. But the electric motor response is different: full torque from low speed, no diesel vibration, and a much cleaner hydraulic system. On the good side, that can reduce gearcase wear. On the tricky side, the diagnostic system is now part of the story. If a machine throws a final drive code, the local independent shop with a torque wrench may not have the software to read it.
The same lesson applies to Volvo's electric trucks. The VNR Electric is being spec'd for refuse routes, so you will see more electric trash trucks in municipal fleets. Those fleets will need to decide whether they service the drive motors at a dealer or build in-house capability. The purchasing principle stays the same: compare total cost over the contract, not the price of the first service visit.
What a Tractor Supply Store Taught Me About Parts
I'm not going to say every generic part is bad. We buy filters, hoses, and certain wear items from farm and tractor supply stores all the time. But final drives are where I stopped treating a tractor supply shelf like an engineering reference.
Here is the difference. When you order through a Volvo dealer portal, the system matches the component serial number and makes sure the part you get is the current revision. A generic aftermarket part might fit the bolt holes but be based on the original design from 2011. If Volvo changed the seal package to fix a known leak, the generic supplier may not know, and they certainly are not telling you.
So before you approve an aftermarket final drive part, ask for the cross-reference, the test data, and the warranty in writing. If the salesperson says it is 'identical to OEM,' ask them to commit to that on the PO. Most of them won't. That is the red flag.
When My Rule Doesn't Apply
If your machine is still under warranty, stop reading and call the dealer. Rebuilding anything yourself can void coverage. If you rent equipment, you are better off tracking cost per engine hour than TCO because uptime is already priced into the rental. And if you own one machine and have no backup, replace early. The cost of a shutdown at a critical site is almost always higher than the difference between a rebuild and a new assembly.
I've kept the numbers here conservative, but they are based on our own orders, not a national database. I have not tracked every Volvo model, and I can't speak to the metallurgy inside a final drive. That's the technician's job. My job is to make sure that when they tell us what needs to happen, the cost side is honest, complete, and ready for a sanity check.
