Scenario B: The Commercial Middle — Where Most Contractors Should Live

This is the EC140, EC210, EC220, EC240 territory—and honestly, this is where most mid-size contractors end up, whether they planned it or not.

The opposite mistake shows up here, too. Contractors buy a 40-tonne machine because "bigger is better." The reality? On commercial site work, a 22-tonne EC220 with a good operator will typically outperform a 40-tonne machine on cost per cubic yard.

I went back and forth on this for two weeks before I committed to renting an EC480 for a 2023 highway subcontract. On paper, buying made sense: lower hourly rate, asset equity, tax advantages. Transport: Can You Move It With a Truck Bed?

You need to verify the payload rating against the machine's weight, and understand the difference between what a truck can legally carry and what it can pull. They're not the same.

The "crewe tractor" scenario follows the same pattern: a crew needs a utility tractor for site cleanup, light hauling, and material handling. The idea is that one versatile machine covers everything. In my experience, that logic rarely survives contact with a real job site. Either the machine is too small for the excavator work, or too big for the chores. How to Figure Out Which Scenario You're In
