So when someone asks me, “Should I buy genuine Volvo parts or save money with aftermarket?” I don't give them a slogan. I give them a spreadsheet.
Our fleet is eight excavators, five of them Volvo EC-series machines (an EC220, three EC250s, and an EC480 we bought used in 2021), plus two other-brand units and a couple of wheel loaders. On the invoice, aftermarket parts beat OEM for almost every wear item we buy. In our 2024 orders: aftermarket hydraulic hoses ran 25–35% below the Volvo equivalent. A fuel filter kit for the EC480 was about $180 from the Volvo dealer; an aftermarket equivalent was $115. Bucket teeth and cutting edges: roughly 20% cheaper from aftermarket suppliers. Wiper blades? Not even worth the conversation.
If you're only looking at the dollar figure, the answer is obvious. And for a certain class of parts, the aftermarket choice is the right one. But here's the part that surprised me—the lowest-priced part can be the most expensive one on the job.
In Q2 2024, I approved a switch to an aftermarket hydraulic pump on one of our EC250s. The supplier's quote was $4,800. The Volvo dealer's list price for the remanufactured OEM pump was $7,150 at the time (it's up since then—Volvo moved list prices in January 2025). I went back and forth for two weeks. The supplier had been reliable on other components; the savings were real. On paper, the aftermarket pump made sense. But my gut said we'd regret it.

The aftermarket pump failed at 900 hours. The OEM reman units in our other machines have averaged 5,000+ hours without a failure, per our fleet tracking records. A set of aftermarket injectors for our EC220 cost $1,200. Genuine Volvo injectors were $1,850. We saved $650 on the set, and it felt like a win—until one of the injectors triggered a misfire code at 1,100 hours. The diagnostic time alone was $400 in labor. And with injectors, the risk goes beyond the part itself: a failed injector can send debris through the entire fuel system. The Volvo injectors in our fleet, in six years of records, have never failed before 4,500 hours.
The most frustrating part of parts procurement is the pattern: time after time, the aftermarket part looks identical on paper—same dimensions, same alloy spec, same pressure rating—and then it doesn't last. You'd think written specs would prevent surprises, but real-world durability varies in ways the spec sheet can't capture. That's not a knock on all aftermarket manufacturers. It's a warning about the difference between “compatible” and “identical.”
Our crew calls the hydraulic breaker attachment on the EC480 the “skull crusher.” (Not a marketing name. The thing absolutely pulverizes concrete.) We ran an aftermarket breaker piston seal on it and replaced it every six to eight weeks. The OEM seal has been in place for 11 months and counting. Same material spec on paper. So the conclusion in this dimension: OEM wins on cost per operating hour for critical components; aftermarket can be a solid match for non-critical wear items. I'm not saying every OEM part is three times better. Aftermarket hydraulic hoses, for example, have performed fine for us past 3,000 hours. Standard filters that meet the spec? Here's where the decision gets genuinely situational.
Warranty. When we installed an aftermarket part on a Volvo excavator that was still under factory warranty, the dealer flagged it in their system. If that aftermarket part contributes to a downstream failure, the manufacturer can deny the claim—and you won't win that argument. I know a contractor in Idaho who lost a warranty claim worth more than he'd saved in three years of buying aftermarket parts. Here's how he put it:
“The math didn't work. I saved maybe $3,000 a year on parts and lost a $22,000 warranty claim because of one aftermarket component.”
Resale value. We sold an older EC220 in early 2024. The buyer's inspector went through our service records line by line. Because the machine had documented OEM maintenance history, we got $8,000 more than the lowball offer. That roughly neutralized the premium we'd paid for OEM parts over the previous four years. It's not that aftermarket parts automatically kill resale value—it's that documented OEM history gives you leverage at the negotiating table.
Parts availability. This one depends on your location. We're in a relatively remote region. The Volvo dealer can usually get critical parts to us in two days. An aftermarket warehouse quote can stretch to five days plus shipping. When an excavator is sitting idle, our internal cost is about $150–200 per hour. If a “cheap” part takes three extra days to get to us, that's $3,600 to $4,800 of idle cost before the part even arrives. Which, honestly, has changed my mind more than any other argument.
And here's a side note on how I plan procurement. I watch construction sector financials because they're a leading indicator for parts demand. People ask, “What is happening with crane company stock today?” and why I'd care. After seven years of comparing quotes, tracking failures, and counting downtime (and being wrong more times than I'd like to admit), here's the policy I've landed on. I call it the three-tier rule.
- Tier 1 – OEM only: Hydraulic pumps, valves, cylinders, fuel injection components, electronic control modules, anything with software calibration. If a part can fail and cause chain-reaction damage, I don't gamble on it.
- Tier 2 – OEM preferred, aftermarket acceptable under conditions: Filters, belts, seals, sensors. Acceptable aftermarket if the machine is out of warranty, the vendor provides a credible spec sheet, and the aftermarket price is at least 40% lower to compensate for the higher failure risk.
- Tier 3 – Always aftermarket: Cab trim, floor mats, wiper blades, mirrors, cosmetic items. If the worst-case failure costs $50 and an hour of downtime, I'm not paying OEM prices.
One more thing that doesn't fit neatly into tiers: the relationship with your Volvo dealer. I've worked with the same district parts manager for five years. He knows our fleet, he knows our uptime targets, and he's flagged pricing changes before they hit the invoice. That relationship has saved me money in ways that never show up in a quote comparison.
And let me be honest about limitations. If you run a single excavator with no backup and every deadline is tight, shift everything one tier toward OEM. Bottom line
I grew up with Hess trucks on a shelf in my bedroom—little yellow toy trucks that cost my parents about $15 each. Now I manage parts procurement for real machines that cost half a million dollars. The toy trucks survived because they didn't have to dig for ten hours a day. Real Volvo excavators don't get that luxury.
What I mean is: the perceived “savings” on an invoice only become real when a part completes its service life without unplanned downtime. The rule I'd tell any other controller is simple—compare cost per operating hour, not invoice price. A part that costs 35% less but lasts 60% fewer hours isn't cheaper. It's more expensive, and the difference shows up in downtime, labor, and a phone call you don't want to make to an unhappy project manager.
That “20% savings” on a quote can cost you thousands when the machine stops paying its keep. I'm not saying always buy OEM. I'm saying always buy by the hour—especially for the stuff that keeps a $450,000 Volvo excavator running when it matters most.
