Why I ended up in this conversation
I'm a purchasing administrator for a mid-size construction services company. I do not drive a wheel loader, and I do not design material yards. I'm the person who manages roughly $1.4 million a year in equipment support, parts, rentals and maintenance across three locations. When operations and finance evaluate machinery, I'm the one asking about schedules, invoices, downtime, and the gap between a spec sheet and a Tuesday morning.
So when the phrase 'Volvo all electric' came up in our 2024 equipment review, I was not picturing an SUV. I was picturing a wheel loader in a loading yard and asking whether it would be ready when the crew needed it.
The question that sounds more useful than it is
Everyone asks about range. I asked about range. Operators ask about range. Finance asks about range. And for a wheel loader, range is close to the wrong question.
A wheel loader does not travel long distances. It works in cycles: load, reverse, lift, dump, repeat. The real problem is whether the machine has enough energy at the exact moment it is needed, and whether the site can put that energy back into the machine during the natural pauses in the workday.
With diesel, refueling is fast and simple. With electric, refueling is slower and requires infrastructure. If the charging system is not matched to the duty cycle, a perfectly good electric machine becomes an unreliable one.
The hidden piece: duty cycle, charger, and site power
The tempting way to compare options is to treat an all electric wheel loader as a diesel loader that happens to have a battery instead of a tank. But the meaningful difference is not the fuel. It's the timing of the energy flow.
In our 2024 review, the direct energy cost estimate looked strong. The part that changed the analysis was the site. The charger had to be installed. The electrical panel needed capacity. The utility company needed lead time. Those costs are not in the loader brochure, and they are real.
Here's an example from the way I think about loading operations. If you're filling dump trucks, the truck bed capacity affects the whole cycle. A Volvo wheel loader may fill a truck bed in several passes, then wait while the next truck backs in. Those waiting windows can be enough to charge the loader between work bursts, or not, depending on charger output and length of pause. The conversation should start there, not with 'how many miles of range does it have.'
What it costs to get this wrong
The failure mode is not dramatic. The loader doesn't break down in the middle of a job site in a way that makes a dramatic story. It simply doesn't start, or it loses charge earlier than planned. That creates the same feeling as dealing with a car with a bad fuel pump: you turn the key, the machine may crank, but it isn't going anywhere until the energy supply problem is fixed.
The cost isn't only money. It's trust. If the crew is standing around waiting for a charge, no spreadsheet about fuel savings will save the project. That is why I stopped worrying about range and started worrying about the charging schedule.
After we approved the pilot, I kept second-guessing. What if the electrician was late? What if the utility transformer date slipped? I only relaxed once I saw a written installation date and a backup rental plan. The hesitation was not about Volvo; it was about the system around the machine.
A better order of operations
If you're considering a Volvo all electric wheel loader, start by mapping a typical workday. Write down the heavy periods and the pauses. Ask how much charge can be restored during each pause.
Volvo's dealer network can work with that information. Ask for a site-specific charging plan before you start comparing purchase prices. If the site needs a transformer or a panel upgrade, include that line item in the total cost. And add a buffer; extra charging capacity is less expensive than an unplanned diesel rental.
The machine itself is not the hard part. The system around it is. Once you plan for that, the electric wheel loader looks much less risky, and the buying decision finally becomes a normal one.
