Mistake 1: The Concrete Plant Silo
I rented a 40-ton concrete plant silo. Forty tons. Let's do the math that I didn't do:

The conventional wisdom says a silo gives you a comfortable buffer so you can pace refills. My experience suggests otherwise: at full production, that 40-ton silo gave me roughly 80 minutes of binder before it ran dry. It wasn't a buffer. It was a countdown timer. I stood in front of that timer and convinced myself I had enough time.
Mistake 2: The Diesel Gen Set
The site's power was unreliable. The plant manager warned me: two brownouts in the previous month. (Coal power production feeds the grid fine, but the internal supply at their materials yard was another story.) So I rented a 150 kVA diesel gen set to run the batch plant, the water pump, and the site lighting.

I've personally made (and documented) enough costly mistakes that I now maintain our team's checklist so others don't repeat them. This job earned a permanent place on it. The rules I added:
- Rent the silo that's too big. If you think you need 40 tons, rent two 40-ton units or step up to 60. The price difference is small compared to the cost of a cold joint.
- Oversize the diesel gen set by 50%. Electric motors surge. Don't learn this by watching a breaker trip mid-pour.
- Never add equipment to fix a planning problem. The Central Machinery cement mixer was a symptom of panic, not a solution. I still have it. It's a good machine—for a job that merited it. This wasn't that job.
The Real Lesson: Know Your Boundaries
I've come to believe, slowly and expensively, that the contractor who says "this isn't my strength—here's who you should call" is more reliable than the one who says "we do it all." "We do it all" usually means "we do all of it moderately." I had become the second contractor, and it cost me.
The vendor who says "we don't normally run batch plants, so let's bring in someone who does" earns trust for everything else. I should have made one phone call to a concrete specialist in May. He would have caught the silo, the gen set, and the fly ash math for maybe $500. Instead, I paid $4,800 in tuition to the same school I've attended my whole career.
That said, I'm not saying every generalist is dishonest. I'm saying this: whatever you're best at, that's where your margin lives. I'm best at excavation and heavy equipment—the Volvo machines ran flawlessly through this entire mess, and I never once doubted them. But no machine, no matter how dependable, fixes a bad plan.
